Projects

Pilot Light has supported various projects in Africa since 2008. Since 2011, we have focused solely on SUSTAINABLE, INCOME GENERATING projects. In 2022, we realized that the part of our program that was making the most impact was the Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) groups, and that they work best when implemented in the poorest communities. We now work ONLY with the VSLA model, which is commonly used in Africa, but we have modified the model in a few ways to help ensure the success of those we serve.

When an individual really understands the Village Savings and Loans methodology of saving money, taking loans, paying back and reinvesting profits and additional loans, they can incrementally increase their income over time in a very significant way. The goal is that the income will grow to the extent that the smaller loans available in the groups will no  longer be large enough to make an impact on the growth of the individual’s business and that individual will then graduate to the local micro loan banks.

This is a SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION in the fight against poverty.
