After arriving late last night, we (my husband Stephen, our friend/filmmaker Rand, Pilot Light Director of Programs Delphin and I) spent our first day in Uganda today recovering from the 24 hour trip here, sleeping late and having lunch at the home of my old friends Dorothy and Fabian. It was a national holiday and Kampala was the most tranquil I have ever seen it. Dorothy and her daughters prepared a traditional Ugandan meal, including my favorite dish, kalo, made from millet. Sitting on their back porch over looking an intensely green ravine, we were lulled by the sounds of the vast variety of birds in her mango, avocado and jack fruit trees. It was incredibly peaceful.
I have never had a day to acclimate before on previous trips and it has been great. Tomorrow we will leave the hotel early in the morning to get to business. Our first stop will be Lira in northern Uganda…
